Back in the May of 2018, my friends and I decided to stay in a villa in Koh Samui overlooking the ocean. We were celebrating finishing our final high school exams and spending our final week with each other before parting ways and heading off to University all over the world.

Blue Hour by the beach

We stayed around 20 minutes drive from the main beach area, and rented out a villa on a cliff by the ocean.

Being 11 girls, we were happy to explore things to do in Koh Samui.

Top 5 Things I recommend:

- Getting an authentic Thai oil massage

- Visiting the night market (Fisherman's Village) and trying local Thai delicacies and buying souvenirs

- Visiting the bars by the beach (e.g. Arc Bar) and having a casual drink at sunset

- Visit the Absolute Ice Bar (Fun for pictures)

- Definitely going to the main city to try authentic Thai food (any restaurant)

- Full Moon party (Koh Phangan, happens every full moon)

Sunsets in Koh Samui

Being recent High School graduates, it was a common occurrence to spend our nights drinking a bit too much and visiting the club (Green Mango being our favourite). Many bars serve buckets of mixer drinks sold at a very cheap price which everyone can drink from.

Daily view from our villa

With travelling to tourist hot spots come many perils.

Things to avoid:

- Going to a bar which is not reputable (fake alcohol is not uncommon)

- Visiting areas which are not well lit, some roads are not newly built and areas should be avoided

- Visiting tourist hotspots without watching your belongings (pickpockets common if not careful)

- Not negotiating for some services (sometimes prices are inflated on purpose)

- Giving money to begging children (just avoid it)

- Exchanging money anywhere (many money exchangers have terrible exchange rates and you may lose a lot of money for commission)

Overall Thailand is one of my favourite places to visit in Asia. It has so many lovely people, very welcoming locals, cheap food, amazing massages, beautiful beaches and countless more. I recommend going to Thailand during dry season (November- April), not during monsoon as rainy periods are inconvenient. Travel to Koh Samui is very convenient with many international flights available at low costs.

Recommended: when visiting with friends, renting a villa is the best idea, as the view you get is priceless and the experience is phenominal.
